Inside Line Promotions – PEORIA, Ariz. (March 3, 2020): Alex Hill was excited to make her season debut last weekend at Canyon Speedway Park with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
Unfortunately, the doubleheader presented significant challenges.
“It was great to be at the track again,” she said. “But it wasn’t the best weekend for us. Several things made it a big challenge. There was lots of strong competition and we didn’t catch a break with our pill draw on a track that wasn’t really racy.”
Hill began her weekend on Friday by starting sixth in a heat race.
“I dropped back to seventh and then was able to get back to sixth,” she said. “I was working on passing the fifth-place car on the last lap when he came down on me so I ended up sixth.”
Her heat race finish and a ninth-place run in a qualifier slotted her 10th on the starting grid for her B Main. Hill ended 11 th before she used a provisional to start at the rear of the field in the feature.
“I fell back a bit at the start of the B Main,” she said. “Then it took me a long time to finally get around one car. It’s kind of tough to get a transfer position when you start that far back in a B Main.”
Hill lined up seventh in her heat race on Saturday, when the action offered an especially challenging track.
“They over-watered the track,” she said. “We had to go out and pack it three different times. It still really wasn’t ready for the heat races.
“I had a pretty good start in my heat race, but I couldn’t grab my tear-off. It wasn’t long before I couldn’t see anything due to all the mud. I eventually flipped my visor up to see and I got passed while I was driving one-handed. By the time I got the tear-off pulled I had lost too much ground to get back and be able to make a pass.”
Misfortune struck again for Hill just prior to the green flag for the B Main, which she was scheduled to start 14th.
“There was an issue with the front end during our warm-up lap that resulted in a couple of parts breaking so that ended our night,” she said.
Hill is looking forward to her first career competition in California this weekend when she’ll race at three different tracks with the ASCS National Tour – on Friday at Merced Speedway in Merced; on Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville; and on Sunday at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma.
“I’m really looking forward to the races this weekend,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to race in California, especially after I moved here for school.
“I know the competition will be strong. We had over 50 cars in Arizona and I expect more this weekend. We’ll just put last weekend behind us and hope for better pill draws and tracks that are a bit racier.”
