ST. HELENA, Calif. (May 31, 2022) – Despite his recent trip to Pennsylvania Posse Country resulting in frustration, first missing main event action during Port Royal Speedway’s Bob Weikert Memorial preliminary on Saturday, May 28, then retiring early from Port’s Bob Weikert Memorial finale on Sunday, May 29, the result of damage suffered from wall contact while racing in a podium position, Rico Abreu’s statistics leading into the holiday weekend were impressive, accumulating three consecutive top-ten finishes with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series in visits to Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Suffice it to say, Abreu’s positives far outweigh the negatives.
Abreu, driver of the Abreu Vineyards, Rowdy Energy, Curb Records, Stadelhofer Construction, Wiser Agency, Tony Toste Construction, Lucas Oil Products, ShopRico.com, Salty’s BBQ, No. 24 sprint car, finished sixth, third, and seventh in his aforementioned trio of top-ten appearances, earning those results in visits to Lincoln Speedway on May 11, Williams Grove Speedway on May 14, and Bridgeport Speedway on May 17, in respective fashion.
A sound performance all evening, the St. Helena, California, native never left the podium in the Williams Grove Speedway Morgan Cup, first recording the third-fastest time in his respective group, driving on to win his respective heat race. A third-place finish in the evening’s dash set-up Abreu’s eventual feature success.
A similar preliminary effort in Lincoln Speedway’s Gettysburg Clash, Abreu was the quickest in his qualifying group before winning his respective heat race; he started fourth on the “A” grid before fading slightly to sixth.
Although forced to retire in Port Royal Speedway’s Bob Weikert Memorial finale, there were plenty of shining moments leading into the incident. For instance, Abreu was the evening’s highest point earner, accumulating the most points between qualifying time trials and heat race action (passing points format). Abreu went on to secure the pole via redraw, battling within the top three when the wall contact occurred. The team tried to make repairs in the work area, but the damage was done.
“It’s been a pretty solid last few weeks for this Rowdy Energy team. The guys work their tails off and I appreciate what they do to help us pull off a schedule like we do. Port Royal led to heartache, but that first win is coming soon. We just have to keep working hard,” Rico Abreu explained, who owns ten top-ten finishes in 2022. “A big thanks to the fans for coming out and supporting us. We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them.”
