PETERSEN MEDIA: After waiting nearly a full calendar year in between USAC National Sprint Car Series wins, Robert Ballou had to wait just over a week this time as the Rocklin, CA native made a late race move to become the fourth different driver to win three Tony Hulman Classic’s at Terre Haute Action Track.
“This one feels really special to me,” Ballou said. “Working at the track all winter for my boss Scott Ronk and Bernie Stuebgen trying to make this place what it once was, to win this race is incredible.”
The action kicked off on Friday night where Ballou got off to a challenging start as he timed the Suburban Subaru/Deaton’s Waterfront Service/Berks Western Telecom Inc. backed No. 12 in 13th fastest in time trials.
Needing a win to improve his starting position, ‘The Mad Man’ would come up short as his second-place finish placed him in the seventh row for first feature event of the weekend.
With passing at a premium for most, Ballou was the exception to the rule. Hustling in his Ballou Motorsports/Don Ott Powered entry, Ballou was able to make up ground in a hurry as he picked off cars en route to entering the Top-Five.
Finishing fourth on the track, a failed tech inspection from a competitor would bump Ballou up to a third-place finish as he earned Hard Charger honors.
While the action on Saturday rained out, a rain date on Sunday saw Ballou get off to a much stronger start as he timed in second fastest in time trials before finishing fifth in his heat race.
Taking the green flag from the fifth starting spot, Ballou battled a tight car in the early goings of the feature and simply waited for his car to come to him.
As his car came to him, Ballou was able to get his elbows up and work his way into second as he set his sights on Logan Seavey who had built up a sizeable lead.
Erasing nearly a two-second advantage, Ballou slid to the spot with just seven laps left in the race.
Out front, Ballou was able to continue to set a strong pace that led him to the point as he went on to pick up his second win of the season, and his third career Hulman Classic that comes with the coveted Rifle.
Robert Ballou would like to thank Suburban Subaru, Deaton’s Waterfront Service, Rossie Feed and Grain, Berks Western Telecom, Inc., Dan Roberts Motorsports, Dragonfly Aviation, Hinchman Indy, Don Ott Racing Engines, Manvel Motorsports, CSI Shocks, Walker Performance Filtration, Amsoil Inc, Murray’s Body Shop, Pacific Grass and Turf, MPHG Promotions Inc, Team Jack Foundation, Olson Custom Design, Konnected Clothing, Hooker Harness, Indy Race Parts, Hoosier Tire, Schoenfeld Headers, ISC Racers Tape, Chalk Racing Products, Keizer Aluminum Wheels, Saldana Racing Products, Moose Blocks, Inc., AO Designs, and Arai Helmets for their support.
