Inside Line Promotions – BARBERVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2020) – Mason Daniel made the most of an opportunity to start the A Main Friday night during the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series season opener at Volusia Speedway Park.

Daniel was mired deep in the field in a heat race and the Last Chance Showdown after a tough qualifying result, forcing the team to use a provisional to start at the rear of the field for the 30-lap main event during Night 3 of the sprint car portion of the DIRTcar Nationals.

“We did something different and really liked it,” he said. “We were able to run the bottom, the middle, the top. Wherever the guy was in front of me I could go the other way and keep air on my wing. It was a fun race.”

Daniel charged from 26th to a 15th-place result, which tied his career-best finish during a World of Outlaws race and was tied for the most cars any driver passed. It also marked Daniel’s best outing at the fast half-mile oval where he made his debut last year.

“This is my second time at this track and this year there was a hole going into turn one that would really upset the car,” he said. “That was tricky and something we had to adapt to. I felt like we were better this year, but we just didn’t qualify very well.”

Qualifying is critical, especially when two dozen of the top drivers in the world are racing as was the case during the five-night sprint car portion of the DIRTcar Nationals. Daniel moved forward in every feature race he competed in during the week, including a drive from 27th to 23 rd after using a provisional to start the main event on Sunday.

“We’ve been good some nights and not great other nights,” he said. “We need to work on the beginning of the night, hot laps and qualifying. Just getting the car better for qualifying is where I’m struggling with, especially with this track. At the end of the night we have it figured out; we just need to have it figured out better at the beginning.”

Daniel will take the next month off before resuming World of Outlaws competition March 13 at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, and March 14 at LoneStar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, during the East Texas Lone Star Shootout.
