ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa.: Danny Dietrich’s decision to compete at Lincoln Speedway more during the season appears to be a good one.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the Abbottstown, Pa., oval has provided a good racing surface each week to start the year. So much so, that Dietrich and other competitors have optimum conditions to pass.
That was the case again on Saturday night. Dietrich took advantage of the racy surface to charge from eighth and set a new 30-Lap non-stop track record of 7:44.249 on his way to a third win at the speedway in 2022.
“We’re not out there to set records for the pace of the feature,” Dietrich chuckled. “I was just biding my time. I knew I picked off a lot of lapped cars, and I just wanted to make sure I didn’t make a mistake.
“It was just a good night overall. I don’t know where we will be next Saturday. It makes it tough to go up the road, but we will see what happens and play it by ear this week.”
CHARGING TO THE FRONT: Danny Dietrich started eighth on the grid and wasted little time carving his way to the front.
Tyler Esh jumped out to the lead with Austin Bishop and Devon Borden following close behind. Dietrich settled into fourth and zipped past Esh, who started to fall through the order, by the completion of Lap 4.
Dietrich and Borden traded second on Lap 5. The Gettysburg driver took the position for good five laps later on the low side of Turn 1 and set sail after Bishop, who built a .724-second advantage.
THE MOVE FOR THE WIN: It didn’t take long for Danny Dietrich to challenge and overtake Bishop for the top spot.
Dietrich cut the gap to a couple of car-lengths in the first and second corner on Lap 11. At the other end of the speedway, he pulled the trigger with a low move out of Turn 4 to win the race back to the stripe.
Within four laps, Dietrich opened up a 1.441-second lead, and the race was over. The lead increased to 3.278 seconds by Lap 20, as Dietirch knifed through backmarkers with ease.
“It seemed like we lapped a lot of cars, so I was just trying to not make a mistake,” Dietrich said. “It was pretty treacherous around the top. The track is pretty dog gone good, and you can run the top in three and four.
“It’s not easy, and that’s what we kind of preach to these tracks … is to get a cushion. Don’t get a cushion that is just easy to drive. Even when you are out there leading, you are watching people bicycle or trip up on the cushion, and you’ve got to keep an eye out the whole time or you’re going to end up being the caution.”
FINISHING OFF THE NIGHT: Fellow competitors could provide no resistance to Danny Dietrich’s pursuit of his 58th Lincoln Speedway victory.
Dietrich carved up the field to build a 4.983-second lead by Lap 25 and took the checker by 5.507 seconds at the stripe. Borden, Alan Krimes, Bishop, and Trey Hivner completed the top five.
In the 358 Sprint Car main event, Logan Rumsey took the lead on the 15th circuit to capture the 20-Lap main event.
Jayden Wolf led 14 of the first 15 laps before succumbing to Rumsey. Brett Wanner, Kody Hartlaub, and Jeff Rohrbaugh completed the top five.
