Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (May 5, 2020) – The 2020 racing season is resuming this week for Dominic Scelzi, who is heading to the middle of the country.
Scelzi will join the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series on Friday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, before tackling the West Texas Crude Nationals at West Texas Raceway in Lubbock, Texas, on May 12-13.
“All of it is really weird,” he said. “I felt like we were going to have one of the most wide open schedules of my life and then it all stopped. I don’t know what to expect to get going again. We were able to make some laps last weekend at Kern County to knock the rust off. Now it’s about getting back in the swing of things and hitting all the races we can.”
Scelzi has been away from racing for the last two months after earning three straight top-10 finishes in Arizona and California with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour in late February and early March. Now his focus shifts to the half-mile oval in Iowa, where he has recorded at least one top-10 finish during each of the last three years.
Scelzi captured his first career win at Knoxville Raceway in 2018 to earn a bid into the Knoxville Nationals for the first time. He placed fourth during the Hard Knox Night last year to lock into the Knoxville Nationals for the second straight year.
“Every time I’ve been there the last few years I’ve felt competitive,” he said. “We’ve run well with the Outlaws, with the All Stars and with the locals. I feel really good. I think we’ve built something where I feel strong there. I feel ready physically and mentally, and I’m excited to get back to Knoxville.”
The following week begins with his debut at West Texas Raceway for a 360ci winged sprint car doubleheader next Tuesday and Wednesday.
“We want to win,” he said. “I’m hoping we can run well on Friday and that will give us confidence rolling into the place. We’re driving a long way and we’re going there with the goal of winning.”
