Inside Line Promotions – NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (July 5, 2022) – David Gravel captured his 18th top five of the season last Saturday during impressive fashion at Cedar Lake Speedway. The Big Game Motorsports driver qualified fourth quickest, won a heat race and advanced from sixth to fifth place in the dash to line up on the inside of the third row for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series main event. Gravel quickly climbed to third during the Independence Day Spectacular feature, but a flat tire relegated him to the work area midway through the race. “We qualified good and heat raced well,” he said. “We didn’t get the dash draw we wanted, but being in a six-car dash I wasn’t too worried about it. We picked off a car early in the feature and then got to third. I was settling into third and seeing how the race played out. Gio (Scelzi) got a flat tire and into the wall in front of us. I moved down to dodge him and he must have hit something on the track. I ran it over and got a flat, too. I went to the work area. Luckily there were only 16 cars on the lead lap I believe. We had a good race car and were able to pass five or six guys on the first lap. Then Sheldon (Haudenschild) got a flat and we passed some more cars to get to the top five. We got to third and then Brad (Sweet) got in the wall the last lap and I was able to get underneath him. It feels really good to rebound and get second after we thought a good run was gone.” It was a great ending to a two-day event that was a work in progress. Friday’s action began with Gravel timing in 11th quickest. He then gained a position to finish third in a heat race before the feature ended with a ninth-place result. “We had a decent qualifying effort for when we went out,” he said. “Before the A Main they did some track work. I had a really good car at the beginning. Once it got slick and started to take rubber we were out of the track a good bit and spinning the tires. We overheated the right rear. It was bald and had cords showing when I came in after the race. We wouldn’t have made another lap. That last restart we were seventh and fell back. After the fact it made sense why we had no grip.” Gravel ranks fourth in the World of Outlaws standings – only two points out of third, 20 points behind second and 58 points out of the lead. Next up for the team are races this Friday at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, and Saturday at Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wis., for the Badger 40. Gravel is seeking his first-ever victory at 34 Raceway. He has won four of the nine career World of Outlaws events at Wilmot Raceway. “34 Raceway is a track we ran good at last year and Wilmot is a place I’ve had a lot of success at so I’m looking forward to this weekend,” he said.
