PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night in Hanford, CA, Kalib Henry rallied from a tough qualifying showing and charged his way to a fifth-place finish with the King of the West Series during the Peter Murphy Classic.
“I tried everything in qualifying and we didn’t get timed in well and found ourselves in an early hole,” Kalib Henry said. “Luckily, we dug ourselves out the rest of the night and came home with a fifth-place finish.”
With 31 cars on hand on Saturday, Henry would just narrowly miss the heat race inversion as he timed the McColloch’s RV Repair/Davis Truck Painting/Driven Homes backed No. 17 entry in 17th fastest.
Lining up in the third row of his heat race, the Mather, CA driver would feel much better in his heat race, though passing proved to be at a premium. Holding on to the fifth and final lock in position, Henry was securely in the 30-lap feature event as he rolled off the starting grid from the 17th starting position.
On a very slick Keller Auto Speedway surface, it would be crucial to get off to a strong start with rubber going down the speedway being a very good possibility.
When the green flights flashed, Henry was hard on the throttle as he quickly moved into the 13th position as the opening laps clicked off quickly.
A couple of stoppages would lead to double file restarts and that would play into Henry’s advantage. Cracking the Top-10 on lap 10, Henry would work into eighth just prior to the race’s halfway point.
Continuing to make moves and grain spots as rubber started going down the surface, Henry took advantage of a miscue ahead of him and found himself up in fifth on the 21st lap.
With the field fully racing in rubber, Henry was able to keep his tires underneath him as he capped his night off with a great charge from 17th to fifth.
“I felt really good heading into the feature after how we ran in our heat,” Henry said. “I knew it was important to get going early with the track, and we were able to do just that. I want to thank my dad for letting us run his engine, and the McColloch’s for their continued support.”
McColloch Motorsports would like to thank McColloch’s RV Repair, Davis Truck Painting, Driven Homes, Inc., ART Speed Equipment, Hansen Machine, Rockstar Services, and Gary Morgan Graphics for their continued support.
BY THE NUMBERS: Starts: 3, Wins: 0, Top-5’s: 1, Top-10’s- 2
