PETERSEN MEDIA: Climbing back aboard the Mittry Motorsports No. 2x on Friday night at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA, Justin Sanders would pick up another favorable finish at his home track as he finished third during the track’s fourth event of the season.
“We had a really good car all night long, we just got beat,” Justin Sanders said. “Shane Golobic and Corey Day were a little better than us and I made a couple of mistakes and had my nose wing collapse early.”
Getting his night off to a great start, Sanders timed the Farmers Brewing/Mittry Construction/North County Plastering backed machine in third fastest in qualifying time trials against the stout 28 car field that was assembled in the pit area.
From the fourth starting position in his heat race, the Aromas, CA driver continued to flex his muscle on the Santa Cruz County ¼ mile bullring as he carved his way up to a second-place finish.
Lining up on the front row of the Ocean Sprints pres. by Taco Bravo Dash, Sanders would continue to look like a favorite to win the feature event as he was able to win the Dash and earn the pole position for the 30-lap feature event.
When Ed Entz dropped the green flag to the field, Sanders would jump out to the early lead as he set and early pace over Shane Golobic. Working the cushion at both ends of the speedway, Sanders would continue to lead until a caution just prior to the halfway point put the field in double file formation for an impending restart.
Under the caution, Sanders’ nosewing would collapse on him and would make his car a bit of a handful to maneuver when the action resumed. As he got his front wheels off the ground when the action continued, it would set up a classic battle for the top spot with Shane Golobic.
As Golobic took command of the race on the 13th lap, Sanders then would feel pressure for a surging Corey Day who came to life working the low groove.
As Sanders continued to manhandle his car with nose wing issues, Day would sneak by on the 20th lap as Sanders then fell back to third.
Feeling pressure from Tanner Carrick late in the race as they ran through traffic, Sanders was able to fend off the challenge as he kept the final spot on the podium when the checkered flag flew on the event.
“It was a bummer to come up short, but you have to really be on your game when you have a field like this checked in, and unfortunately we had a nose wing issue that threw us off enough to slip back to third,” Sanders said. “This Mittry Motorsports team provides me everything I need to be successful, and I am really having fun racing with these guys.”
