PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night at Placerville Speedway, Justyn Cox had a great run going in the feature event but late in the race the curb would give him issues as he packed his right rear full of red clay and was relegated to a 17th place finish.
“Aside from being a little off in qualifying, I was really pleased with how things went in the heat and in the feature up until we had a little bit of bad luck,” Justyn Cox said. “We hit a chunk of the cushion and it packed the right rear full of mud and forced us to the work area with just a few laps left in the race.”
Thirty seven cars checked into Placerville Speedway on Saturday night, and Cox would time the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Adrian Blanco Jewelers backed No. 31c machine in 12th quickest in qualifying time trials.
Lining up on the pole of his heat race, Cox would need to pick up a win to make himself eligible for the Top-Eight redraw or would be relegated to a mid-pack starting position in the feature.
Getting a great jump when the green flag was displayed, Cox powered out to the lead and never looked back. Leading the entirety of the feature on the hooked-up Placerville Speedway, Cox would transfer to the feature and earn a spot in the redraw where he would end up with the eight pill.
As the night moved along the track would start to blow off and would end up going slick for the feature event and building up a thick cushion on both ends of the track.
When the race went green, Cox wasted no time working his way forward as he rode the cushion to fourth in just six laps. Once in fourth, Cox would hook up in an entertaining battle with Tanner Carrick as the duo jockeyed for third and final position on the podium.
With Carrick using the low line in one and two, Cox would give the cushion at that end of the track a try and it would work out as he was able to take over the third spot.
Now working the curb at both ends of the speedway, Cox would begin his pursuit of the lead duo only to develop a huge vibration on the 17th lap as he packed his right rear full of mud and came to a stop on the apron of the speedway in turns one and two.
Able to make repairs, Cox would restart the race from the rear with just eight laps left in the race and went on to tally a 17th place finish.
“It was a bummer deal to have that bad luck in the feature, but I think we are heading in the right direction on our car, and it has me excited to get back up to Placerville this weekend,” Cox said. “Big thanks to Rodney, and everyone for all their hard work, and making it possible to get back out to finish the race.”
