Inside Line Promotions – TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2020): The debut at East Bay Raceway Park featured mixed results for Trey Starks.
The Gobrecht Motorsports driver recorded a top 10, but also ran into a mechanical problem and was caught up in a wreck while competing in 410ci and 360ci competition at the dirt oval.
“We had our fair share of issues,” he said. “It took us a while to get going. We had an issue running decent in the 410 and hurt a motor. And we were battling for a top 10 when we were swept up into a crash in the 360 finale. But we came forward in the features and we were really happy to have the speed we did come feature-time.”
Starks opened an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions doubleheader a week ago Monday by placing 16th in the A Main. The team took a step forward the ensuing night as Starks charged from 24 th to an 18th-place run, which was tied for the second-most cars passed.
“We were up to 16th when we had a mechanical problem and couldn’t finish the race,” he said. “It wasn’t the way we wanted to end the night, but it was great to have the speed we did as the track started to slick off.”
The action shifted to 360 sprint car competition on Thursday for the opening night of the Ronald Laney Memorial King of the 360s. Starks advanced from fifth to fourth place in a heat race and he won a B Main to transfer into the main event. He closed the night by rallying from 17 th to ninth in the A Main.
“We picked up a ton of spots,” he said. “We kept working throughout the night to get the car better. We started to figure it out better in the B Main. Every night we really got better as the track slicked off. It definitely came to us as the night went on. Once I got time to work with the car and race a little we got better as well.”
Friday’s preliminary night rained out. The busy week concluded on Saturday as Starks finished third in a heat race and second in a B Main to lock himself into the 19th starting spot for the 40-lap main event.
“I was up battling for a top 10 late in the race when me and another driver were racing,” he said. “We were trying to split a car in front of us. He went low and I went high. He hit a slick spot and washed up the track. I had nowhere to go and it knocked our front end out. It was a bummer not to get the result we hoped for, but it was positive to have the speed we did to pass the number of cars we passed and to be challenging for another top 10.”
Starks was credited with an 18th-place result.
The team is scheduled to return to action March 13-14 at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, Ala., with the USCS Series.
