PETERSEN MEDIA- Rebounding from a Friday night tip over, Willie Croft was able to pick up a 14th place finish with the King of the West Series on Saturday night during the David Tarter Memorial.

“We really had a fast car both nights,” Croft said. “Friday night I hooked a rut and tipped over running in the Top-Five, and Saturday night we were in a good position again we just went the wrong way a little on our car and faded in the feature.”

Checking in on Friday night for the Brownell/Herseth Classic, Croft would get his night off to a quick start as he timed in second fastest in his qualifying group aboard the Holey Smokes BBQ/Rudeen/Amerikote backed No. 29 mount.

Putting his machine on the front row of his heat race, the Colfax, CA driver Would get the jump and never look back. Leading all eight laps, Croft would take the win and garner a spot in the Dash where his second-place finish put him on the front row of the 25-lap feature event.

Settling into second when the race came to life, and early restart would see Croft get shuffled back to fourth. Running in fourth for much of the race, a lap 17 restart would prove costly. Racing into turns one and two, Croft would catch a rut which resulted in his machine getting upside down, bringing his night to an end.

Making repairs Friday night and Saturday morning, Croft was back in action with the KWS for the 10th David Tarter Memorial later that night.

Timing in third fastest in qualifying time trials, Croft’s third place finish in his heat race would prove to be good enough to lock him into the Dash as well as the impending 35-lap feature event.

Finishing sixth in the Dash, Croft would take the green flag from the outside of the third row for the 35-lap Tarter Memorial feature event. Following an extensive track rework, the new surface would be rather technical for the feature event as it would also have a little character and make things that much more challenging.

Running inside the Top-10 for the first half of the race, Croft would have a couple of hiccups that resulted in him losing track position. Falling all the way back to 16th at one point, Croft would cap his night off with a 14th place finish.

“We didn’t quite make the right adjustments after the track prep and it hurt us later in the race,’ Croft said. “We had really good car speed all weekend long, and I hope we can keep that up heading to Hanford and Tulare next week.”
