Inside Line Promotions – BARBERVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2020) – Brian Brown picked up a pair of top 10s last week at Volusia Speedway Park during the sprint car portion of the DIRTcar Nationals, highlighted by a fourth-place run during a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Car Series race and a charge from 14th to sixth during an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions feature.
Feb. 5 – Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. – Qualifying: 10; Heat race: 7 (5); B Main: 2 (1); Feature: DNF (22).
“In recent years we’ve been fast down here qualifying,” Brown said. “That doesn’t seem to be the issue. We just don’t seem like we’re good the last 15 or 18 laps of a feature. When we got down here (this year) we haven’t qualified well. That put a little bit of a curve ball in our program. You can’t dig yourself out of a hole every night.
“We didn’t qualify well on Wednesday and had to come through the B Main. We weren’t going anywhere in the feature so we called it a night at that point.”
Feb. 6 – Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. – Qualifying: 20; Heat race: 3 (1); Feature: 6 (14).
“We didn’t get qualified well, but in the feature we got our car pretty good,” Brown said. “That was good night for us to go 14th to sixth. With that said I didn’t feel like our car was particularly great so to have a result like that was a positive.”
Feb. 7 – Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. – Qualifying: 20; Heat race: 6 (5); B Main: 4 (5); Feature: DNF (24).
“It was similar to Wednesday as we had to come through the B Main and weren’t doing anything so we pulled off in the feature,” Brown said. “We probably could have stayed out there and ran it up to 17th or 18 th, but if you’re not battling for wins and podiums and top fives it doesn’t matter where you officially finish.”
Feb. 8 – Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. – Qualifying: 7; Heat race: 2 (2); Dash: 3 (3); Feature: 4 (3).
“We got the ball going in the right direction,” Brown said. “We qualified well and had a solid heat race and dash before we got a good top-five finish in the feature.”
Feb. 9 – Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla. – Qualifying: 14; Heat race: 3 (4); Feature: 15 (10).
“Chad, Nate and dad have done a good job of not giving up,” Brown said. “They’ve gone over everything from the wings to the shocks to the chassis to the engine to make sure we aren’t missing anything. Usually whatever happens in Florida stays in Florida. We don’t run in this type of dirt very often.
“We had a fourth and a sixth, which was pretty good. I think the main thing is we’ve been off in qualifying. The way these formats are you cannot get behind. If we can get in the hunt in qualifying we can put some good nights on the board.”
SEASON STATS –
5 races, 0 wins, 1 top five, 2 top 10s, 3 top 15s, 3 top 20s
UP NEXT – Monday and Tuesday at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, Fla., with the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions
“I don’t really know what to expect,” said Brown, who has been to the track once approximately 16 years ago. “I’ve watched videos. That can help you get acclimated. Volusia is a prime example. We’ve had good speed and good notes. Then we come down here and we’re 20th quick. I would have bet the farm that wouldn’t happen. Sometimes having all those notes and experience can help you, but sometimes it can get you into a mindset like, ‘Well that should work.’ Then it takes you a bit to get out of that.”
