PETERSEN MEDIA: Over the last year, Justin Sanders has been extremely strong at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway. This past weekend, Sanders was in contention for wins during Friday and Saturday night competition though would just come up short as he earned two second place finishes.
“The last couple of years Silver Dollar Speedway has been really good to me, and this past weekend was another really good showing,” Justin Sanders said. “We were in contention to pick up a pair of wins, we just came up a little short during both feature events.”
Friday night would kick the doubleheader weekend off in Chico, CA with an unsanctioned 410ci event dubbed as the Brownell/Herseth Classic. Using a modified All Star/SCCT format, Sanders would time the Farmers Brewing/Mittry Construction backed No.2x entry in fastest in his time trial group, and that would place him on the front row of his heat race.
Getting the jump in his heat over teammate, Max Mittry, Sanders would go on to lead the way in the eight-lap race and lock himself into the six-lap Dash. Finishing third in the Dash, the Aromas, CA driver would line up in the second row of the 25-lap Brownell/Herseth Classic Feature event.
Settling into fourth when the feature event came to life, Sanders would race his way into third on the fifth lap. Running in third for much of the ‘A’, Sanders would move into second just after the race reached the halfway point and began pressuring Dominic Scelzi until a pair of stoppages slowed their battle.
Presented with a couple of late opportunities to challenge for the lead via double-file restarts, Sanders couldn’t quite make anything stick, as he settled for a runner up finish on this night.
Saturday night marked the 10th running of the David Tarter Memorial, a race that Sanders won in 2021 under SCCT sanction and looked to pick up the 2022 edition under KWS sanction.
Timing in second fastest in time trials with 30-cars checked into the pit area, Sanders would run third in his heat race and cement himself in both the Dash as well as the 35-lap feature event.
Tallying a fifth-place finish in the six-lap Dash, Sanders would take the green flag form the third row on a very technical Silver Dollar Speedway surface that had a bit of character mixed in.
Wasting no time racing his way to the front of the field, Sanders worked into second on the eighth lap as he began to chase after leader, Corey Day.
Racing by Day to take over the lead on the 14th lap, a caution would waive and negate the Aromas, CA driver’s efforts. The ensuring restart saw Sanders slip back to third where he ran for a handful of laps before clearing Landon Brooks to reclaim second where he would go on to finish.
“We had a run there on Day halfway through the feature but an untimely yellow negated the pass,” Sanders said. “We were a little off on restarts and spent the rest of the race trying to get back into second and he was able to get away. Overall, a good weekend for the team.”
Justin and his team would like to thank Farmers Brewing, Mittry Construction, North County Plastering, Alkaline88, Andy’s Construction, Roadside 24hr Service, Wicked Cushion, Roger’s Diner, Factory Kahne, BG Labels and Tee’s, Walker Performance Filtration, Dixon and Son Tires, Ernie’s Service Center, East Lake Village, FK Rod Ends, Triple X Race Co., DMI, Keizer Wheels, Wings Unlimited, Ti64 Titanium, AIS Heating and Sheet Metal, Fred Lint and Family, JonSan Racing, Sandblast Service, G&N Construction, Steitz Towing, Durden Construction, Ernie’s Service Center, and Steve Duppman Racing for their continued support in 2022.
