PETERSEN MEDIA: Fresh off of a couple week break, Justyn Cox and the Cox-Berco Racing team were in action over the Memorial Day Weekend with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour. Having a part failure end the night Saturday, Cox and company picked up a fifth-place finish during Sunday’s event in Marysville, CA.
“Saturday night we had a new car out with some other new components, and I felt really good right away,” Cox said. “Unfortunately, we had a throttle linkage break in the feature that ended our night early.”
Timing in fourth fastest in qualifying time trials, Cox would line the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Stroppini Ent. Backed No. 31c up in the second row of his heat race.
Finishing third on a hooked up and fast Stockton Dirt Track, Cox moved into the feature event where he took the green flag from the 11th starting spot.
When the race came to life, Cox felt like something was off under the hood of his car as he wasn’t able to make speed like he did in his heat. During a lap 13 caution, Cox would fully have his throttle linkage break and he would make his way back to the pit area as his night came to an early end.
Making the repairs needed for Sunday’s event, Cox and his team made the quick trip to Marysville Raceway for the 22nd Mel and Marlyn Hall Memorial, an event that Cox has won earlier in his career.
Going out first in time trials, Cox would get two good laps in that eventually saw him time in second fastest in his qualifying group. Taking the green flag from the outside of the front row, Cox was able to get the early jump on Sean Becker.
A mid race red bunched the field back up, but Cox was able to mirror is his first start as he set sail from the field and picked up the win.
Moving into the Dash, Cox’s fifth place finish lined him up in the third row of the 35-lap feature event on a track that held moisture still but had developed a few ruts.
With much of the field fighting tight cars and navigating round the hooked up and rough surface, Cox was able to keep his machine inside the Top-Five as he battled with the likes of Tony Gomes and Shane Golobic.
Though he would slip back and fall out of the Top-Five, a late restart let the Clarksburg, CA native sneak back into the fifth at the conclusion of the race.
“I felt good early in the night at Marysville, which is huge because it is a place that I typically struggle at,” Cox noted. “The feature kind of shocked a lot of us with how heavy and rough it got, and we were a little too snug to get through the rough stuff. Happy with how our new car felt, and excited for two nights in Chico, CA this weekend.”
The Cox-Berco Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Michael David Winery, MDW Sports, Stroppini Enterprises, Cranked Naturals, Trex, Master Metal Products, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, VSR, , Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Don Ott Racing Engines, and Richmond Engines for their continued support.
