PETERSEN MEDIA: Tanner Carrick overcame a tough night on Friday that saw engine trouble keep him on the sideline until the feature by putting together a very strong showing with the King of the West Series that culminated with a fifth-place finish during the David Tarter Memorial.
“The guys continue to give me a really good car, and that was the same story this past weekend in Chico, CA,” Carrick said. “We broke a roll pin on our engine Friday that kept us out of action until the feature. Once we hit the track, we started last and ran up to 12th and then came back and ran fifth on Saturday night with the KWS.’
Enduring engine trouble during hot laps on Friday night, Carrick and company were forced to make an engine swap that took place during heat race action.
With 24 cars on hand, Carrick would have a spot in the 25-lap feature event though he would tag the tail end of the field and take the green flag from 24th. From the tail end of the field, Carrick would have his elbows up as he began carving his way through traffic.
With double file restarts playing nice for him personally, Carrick was able to work into 13th by the eighth lap. Racing in close quarters action in the middle of the pack, Carrick would fall back to 16th at the race’s halfway point.
Gaining momentum in the race’s closing stages, Carrick would get back up to 13th on the 23rd lap before getting into 12th as he came to the checkered flag.
Saturday night saw the KWS roll into town for the 10th David Tarter Memorial, and Carrick would continue to showcase the same strong car that he had on display during Friday’s feature as he timed the CVC/Cemex/Interstate Oil backed No. 83T mount in 10th fastest in time trials.
Lining up on the front row of his heat, the Lincoln, CA driver would have a hard fought battle with reigning King of the West Champion, Dominic Scelzi. Finishing second, Carrick would not tabulate enough points for the Dash, but was safely in the 35-lap feature event.
Taking the green flag from the fourth row, Carrick was able to slowly work his way forward on a very technical Silver Dollar Speedway surface.
Moving into sixth on the fourth lap, Carrick would make his first appearance in the Top-5 on the sixth lap but would then fall back to seventh in a tight three-car battle.
Battling hard with Shane Golobic for much of the back half of the feature for the final spot in the Top-Five, Carrick would win the battle as he capped the weekend off with a fifth-place finish.
“It was another good weekend, but I feel bad that I haven’t been able to give this team another win since they keep giving me cars that are capable of winning these races,” Carrick said. “I just need to do a little better job in the seat, because I know the car will be there.”
