PETERSEN MEDIA- Sneaking in one more race prior to this weekend’s King of the West opener, Willie Croft took part in Saturday night’s Sprint Car Challenge Tour opener at Placerville Speedway where he would pick up an eighth-place finish.

“We had a really good car all night long,” Willie Croft said. “I felt really good at the start of the feature, but as the track changed, we faded a little, so we have some work to do to make sure we are there at the end of the race too.”

With 51 cars on hand to open the SCCT season, Croft kicked things off by earning the Bianchi Farms Fast Time qualifier award and put his Holey Smokes BBQ/Rudeen/Amerikote entry in the second row of his heat race.

Garnering a second-place finish in his heat race, Croft’s time trial efforts would pay off as he would earn a berth into the High Sierra Industries Dash as well as into the 35-lap feature event.

Lining up third in the Dash, Croft had a brilliant start that saw him slip through the middle of the front row starters and grab the lead. Leading the duration of the six-lap affair, Croft would pick up the win as he would then lead the field to green for the 35-lap feature event,

When the feature event came to life on the slick and racy Placerville Speedway surface, Croft would get the jump as he set the early pace on the ¼ mile bullring. While out in front, Shane Golobic would move into second and begin to track down Croft.

As the duo battled for the top spot, Croft would keep Golobic at bay. A lap 12 move by Golobic would see Croft slip back to second, and the restart just past the halfway point of the feature saw him slip back to fourth as he battled with the likes of Isaiah Vasquez and Sean Becker.

Hooking up in a battle with Logan Forler in the race’s final laps, Croft would eventually cap his night off with an eighth-place finish as he now shifts his attention to the 2022 KWS slate which kicks off on Saturday night.

“We have been fast in these first three races, and hopefully we can continue to show speed when we drop the 410ci engine in this week,” Croft said. “We have a little work to do on our car, but overall, I am pretty happy with the direction we are heading.”
